School Information

Schedule and Hours of Operation

The Academy follows the JCPS school calendar in most cases.

Our office is staffed 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day during the school year and 9:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m. Monday – Friday through the summer.

School hours are 8:30 a.m. – 3:10 p.m. with carpool beginning at 3:15. Drivers and walkers are dismissed at 3:10. (AIE does not provide student transportation.) Extended hours are available for an additional fee.

A.M. Extended Hours begin at 7:30 a.m. and are provided to both Elementary and High School students needing to arrive prior to 8:00 a.m. Most students arrive to school between 8:10 and 8:25.

P.M. Extended hours are from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. This service is offered to AIE students only. Members of the elementary faculty and staff operate this program for our K-6 students, which allows for further instruction and guidance in academic and social skills. This promotes consistency and continuity for children who are waiting for parents to arrive. AIE Students, 7th-12th, also have opportunity to utilize extended hours and are supervised by members of our faculty and staff. Students use this time to receive support in academic work, and/or opportunity for growth in structured, social interaction.

The I. D. Program (Individual Development) is available year-round to AIE students on an as needed basis. During the school year, the I.D. program is available after school until 5:00. The number of weekly sessions will be scheduled individually in accordance with each family’s needs and or the availability of staffing. I.D. sessions during the summer break are scheduled throughout the week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday as staffing is available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of calendar does the school use?

The school year runs from mid-August to late May. Our calendar mostly follows, with a few exceptions, the Jefferson County Public School calendar. Occasionally, a change will be made to accommodate our school’s needs.

Is any transportation provided to and from school?

Parents are responsible for their child’s transportation to and from school each day. Several families from the school do carpool. At the beginning of each school year, families who are interested in carpooling are given the opportunity to make other AIE families aware of their transportation needs. This has helped many families connect to help each other.

What does the school provide for lunch?

Students bring their lunch from home. Microwaves and refrigerators are available for the storage and preparation of food items. Teachers make any food preparations necessary for grades K-4 and are available for the older children as well, should they require assistance. Starting at 5th grade, students can also purchase individual food items from the Cougar Cafe. Milk and juices are available for sale as well.

What is the dress code?

AIE expects its students to come prepared each day for the process of learning. We believe that each child’s dress should reflect this purpose. There is not a uniform policy, but student dress is guided by a student dress code. This allows for the student to exercise the process of choice and individual identity within certain boundaries. The complete dress code is outlined in the student handbook.

What is the student to teacher ratio?

The student-teacher ratio in the elementary is 1:10 while the ratio is 1:11 in the high school. The typical class size is about 20 in the elementary and 16 in the high school. The elementary grades are structured in such a way as to give the teacher opportunity to work with small groups of 10-12 students during core academic times. The high school teachers employ a variety of techniques that allow them to work with smaller groups, when needed.

What are the qualifications of AIE’s teachers?

Our teachers have college degrees in education or their area of study. Most importantly, all receive on-going training regarding our philosophy and methodology. In addition, AIE experiences very low turnover with its faculty and staff, having an average of about 10 years of service.

What curriculum does AIE use?

AIE has built a curriculum that has grown and developed throughout its history using material and methodology that has demonstrated success in the classroom. Each grade is presented with grade level material in a manner consistent with the Academys methods and philosophy.

At the high school level, the Academy offers the classes outlined by the KHEAA, as required for pre-college curriculum.

Is AIE accredited?

AIE is accredited by the KY Non-Public School Commission.
